Two recent RCTs serve to emphasize the
value of dementia management that focuses on the caregiver.
In an RCT of 406 dementia patients and their spouses, enhanced
counselling and support for the caregiver resulted in a 28%
reduction in the rate of nursing home placement as well as improvements
in caregiver depressive symptoms (Mittleman et al, 2006).
In another RCT with 408 dementia patients and their caregivers,
disease management with care managers resulted in significantly
more adherence to clinical practice guidelines for dementia,
higher quality of care, and improved quality of life for the
patients (Vickery et al, 2006).
