Although cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination
is not routinely performed in Canada for the assessment of dementia,
there is building evidence for the ability of certain markers
to predict AD in older adults with (Simonsen et al) or
without symptoms (Fagan et al ). There will be publications
later this year calling for an update of the diagnostic criteria
for AD to include the pre-dementia stage, using brain imaging
and CSF findings as supportive evidence. We may need to use
our needles!
