EFFICACY OF ChEIs IN SEVERE AD AND USING GAS

EDITORIAL COMMENT
The study by Winblad et al comparing donepezil to placebo in severe Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is important in establishing efficacy using outcomes appropriate to this stage of disease. This study was made possible by Dr. Winblad’s determination that patients with severe AD should get as much attention as patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early stages of AD. Similarly, Dr. Rockwood’s determination in developing a patient and family-oriented outcome measure has led to the publication of the study comparing galantamine to placebo in mild to moderate AD using the Goal Attainment Scaling (Rockwood et al).
